Exploring England’s Wine Region: A Rising Star in Sparkling Wine
This month, I had the incredible opportunity to explore England’s wine country firsthand with Wines of Great Britain, and let me tell you—this region is a hidden gem for sparkling wine lovers. While England's winemaking tradition may not be as famous as France or Italy's, it has rapidly gained global recognition for producing some of the most exciting sparkling wines I’ve ever tasted.
A Perfect Climate for Sparkling Wine
As I toured the vineyards in southern England, particularly Kent, Sussex, and Surrey, it became clear why this region is often compared to Champagne. The cool climate and chalky soils, especially on the South Downs, offer the ideal conditions for growing grapes used in sparkling wine. Much like Champagne, the English soil provides excellent drainage, and the cooler temperatures mean a longer growing season, allowing the grapes to develop bright acidity and complex flavors.
Despite the similarities, there’s something special about English sparkling wine that sets it apart from its French counterpart. The wines I tasted had a freshness, energy, and creative spirit that reflects the winemakers’ passion and freedom from the regulations that can sometimes limit experimentation in traditional wine regions.
The Freedom of English Winemaking
One of the things that really stood out to me during my visit was how much freedom English winemakers have to experiment. Unlike Champagne (which you know I LOVE), where regulations can be strict (which is most of the time a GREAT thing), English sparkling wine producers have the flexibility to play with different grape varieties and techniques and some are doing some great things. This results in a diversity of styles and flavors that make exploring English wines so much fun.
I visited several outstanding wineries with Wines of Great Britain, and each one had its own distinct character. What I loved most was seeing how most of the winemakers embraced this freedom while still producing wines of exceptional quality.
Wineries I Visited
If you’re planning a trip to the UK or are just curious about exploring English sparkling wines, here are some of the standout wineries I visited:
Balfour Winery: Located in Kent, Balfour combines tradition with innovation, offering some of the most elegant sparkling wines I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.
Oxney Organic Estate: As one of the largest organic vineyards in England, Oxney focuses on sustainability while producing incredible organic wines. Their approach to winemaking was a personal favorite of mine. This was my favorite of the wineries I visited.
Wiston Estate: This beautiful estate in the heart of the South Downs focuses on traditional methods, and the passion of the team is evident in every bottle. Just another beautiful stop!
Gusbourne Wine: Gusbourne’s sparkling wines are crafted with precision and finesse. I was particularly impressed by their dedication to letting the English terroir shine through. We had a great lunch here and would love to go back when the weather is better.
Oastbrook: Located in Sussex, Oastbrook is a boutique winery with a cute dog named Loira!
Simpsons Wine Estate: This winery in Kent combines old-world tradition with modern technology. I had an amazing time exploring their vineyards and tasting their award-winning wines. Loved the wines and the winery!
Squerryes: Known for its cool-climate sparkling wines, Squerryes’ vineyards sit on the same chalk seam as Champagne. The quality and complexity of their wines were truly memorable. I loved visiting this spot!
Ridgeview UK: One of the leaders in English sparkling wine, Ridgeview continues to set the standard for the region. Their wines are a must-try!
Pairing the Best of British Bubbles
One of the things I love about English sparkling wines is their versatility. During my trip, I discovered just how well they pair with a wide variety of dishes. Whether you’re indulging in seafood, light poultry, or even something quintessentially British like fish and chips, these wines bring a refreshing balance of acidity and flavor that elevates any meal. Their crispness also makes them perfect for more adventurous pairings, which I had a lot of fun trying during my visit!
My Personal Experience in England’s Wine Country
Visiting these vineyards with Wines of Great Britain was an unforgettable experience. There’s a sense of community and innovation among the winemakers that makes this region so special. Each vineyard had its own story to tell, from the meticulous care in the vineyard to the experimental approach in the winery.
